Discover the Certified Horsemanship Association: Elevating Equestrian Excellence

Founded in 1967, CHA is a leading authority in equine education, offering certification programs for riding instructors, riding programs, and equine-related professionals. In this blog, we’ll explore what the CHA offers, the benefits of certification, and how it enhances the equestrian community.

What is the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA)?

The Certified Horsemanship Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of horsemanship instruction and promoting safe, responsible riding and equine management practices. CHA's mission is to "promote excellence in equestrian education and to advance the safety and well-being of horses and riders worldwide."

Why is CHA Certification Important?

For instructors, certification through the CHA is a mark of professionalism and competence. It shows that an individual has met rigorous standards for teaching and horse management. Here are some of the reasons why CHA certification is beneficial:

1. Enhanced Credibility

Whether you’re starting an equestrian business or seeking employment at a riding school or stable, CHA certification signals to clients and employers that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and quality instruction. It’s a well-respected credential in the equestrian world.

2. Improved Safety

The CHA certification process focuses heavily on safety, both for riders and horses. Certified instructors are trained to teach students how to ride responsibly, maintain good posture, and avoid accidents. This focus on safety extends to equine management practices, ensuring that horses are treated with care and respect.

3. Access to Resources

Certified instructors and accredited programs gain access to a wealth of resources from the CHA, including teaching materials, lesson plans, safety guidelines, and ongoing education. These resources help instructors stay up to date on the latest techniques and industry standards.

4. Networking and Community

Becoming a CHA member also connects you to a network of like-minded professionals. The CHA hosts events, conferences, and workshops that provide opportunities to learn, share knowledge, and grow your business.

While at Central Wyoming College earning my Associate's Degrees in Equine Management and Equine Training I was able to become a Level 2 CHA Certified Instructor for both English and Western disciplines. Two certifiers visited our arena in Riverton, WY and we taught three to four lessons over the course of two days. Becoming a certified riding instructor has opened the door to endless networking oportunities and lesson resources.
